Choose the finish before you choose the method
If the goal is a flat ceiling, the contractor may need more patching and skim work than a project that will receive a new light texture. Tell bidders what the final appearance should be. A vague request to “take off the popcorn” leaves too much room for different assumptions.
At doorways and hall transitions, decide whether adjacent textured ceilings will remain. Clean termination points can make a phased project look intentional.
Confirm what is protected, repaired and painted
Ask how furniture, floors, ceiling fans and vents are handled. The quote should state whether fastener holes, torn drywall paper and exposed joints are part of normal repair or charged separately.
If the ceiling material is older and its composition is unknown, discuss testing before disturbing it. A contractor's experience with texture does not replace appropriate material identification.
