Start with the condition of the ceiling, not the texture alone
Water staining, previous patchwork, loose joint tape and uneven drywall can all become more visible once texture is removed. Before work begins, have the contractor identify repairs that are included in the quote and repairs that would be treated as extras. If the ceiling has been painted repeatedly, also ask how that changes the proposed removal method.
For occupied homes, containment matters. A useful estimate should explain how furniture, flooring, vents and adjacent rooms will be protected and how sanding dust will be controlled. The cleaner the preparation plan, the easier it is to judge whether two otherwise similar bids are actually comparable.
Questions to settle before accepting a Seattle quote
Confirm whether the price covers scraping or covering, drywall repairs, skim coating, sanding, primer, final paint and cleanup. Ask what happens if damaged drywall is discovered after the texture comes down. For older ceilings with unknown materials, discuss testing before anything is disturbed rather than assuming the texture is safe based on appearance alone.
A contractor who can describe the sequence from preparation through final coating usually gives you a more useful picture of the project than a single square-foot removal price.
